So Ruben got to ride an AF CR500 at Capricorn MX club yesterday. It belongs to ex-European mx champion Michelle Casanova no less! After a brief reading of the riot act he let Ruben loose. His two CR500’s were recently stolen and recovered in Nelspruit.

which side of his underpants did he stain ?
He came off a lot more unimpressed that what I would have envisaged. Enjoyed the straight line speed but still felt the 450f is faster overall. The vibrations of a 2T smoker caught him offside. Keeping in mind that he was comparing 30yo tech with current. But it certainly left him with a huge smile. Casanova at age 58 still passionate about mx as most newbies are. The man can still hang cable.

It was my impression as well the first time I rode a CR500. The power hit is hard but very short in duration compared to a 450F that hits hard right through the rev range... The CR500's usable power band is very, very short compared to a 450F, hence why the 450F feels much faster / stronger...

I would have thought as much. Old big bore two stroke vs new age FI 4 stroke. There cant be any comparison surely.

The 500 still took all three holeshots on offer in the senior class up against a host of 2018 and 2019 450 models. Not bad for 30yo technology.

I reckon that's more rider than anything else.

Nope, its more HP than anything else.
Do you have dyno results showing difference in HP and NM with power curve? Would be curious to see.

Plus putting big 2t HP down is an art, a dark art:icon_lol:

The 2T's 500's are rated at about 60HP. A modern 450 is a fraction less than that. Getting the power down on any dirt bike approaching 60HP is tricky.

True, but the 2T will be way worse as it all comes in a very small section of the curve.

Keep in mind that all the modern 450's have electronic launch control devices!

No power valve on that CR500 either. That could make the power band a lot broader

Yes Michele can still haul ass, very smooth riding style.
Not surprised the 500 still hole shot the 450s.
They quicker than they feel.
Sometimes the younger guys also over rev them like they ride a 450, and that makes them go slower.

I have a 84 CR480, air cooled.
Same bike was tested by Enduroworld in 2011, and in straight up drag races it kicked a 2011 CRF450 ass.
I was kind of surprised as it doesn't feel that fast.
In fact my watercooled 500s feel faster.
I'll see if I can post the pics from that shootout.
