Freeride 250 not starting easily

Hey.

I have a buddy who recently got a 250 Freeride with minimal hours on. Bike has never been opened.

When he received it, it did not want to start. Would swing the motor once or twice, and then nothing. (The guy he bought it from said it stood for a while so battery possibly flat)

After 4 batteries and multiple mechanics, one of them eventually changed the brushes in the starter.

It starts now, but it still struggles. Swings once or twice, then dips, and THEN starts. It sounds like the starter is pulling too much from the battery.

Any ideas?

Remove the stator cover. Make sure the weep hole at the bottom is plugged (some good automotive black silicone works well. Make sure the inside is clean and that the bendix and crown wheel are in good condition. The bendix must move nice and freely and the big gear at the back must not spin on it he shaft. If it does, order a 2016 bendix and crown wheel (they must be ordered as a set). Lube all the gears with a good quality grease (red rubber, moly or Bel Ray waterproof). Disassemble the starter motor (mark it so you put it back together the right way) and make sure everything is in good order, including the brushes. If the armature stinks (and I mean really pongs) it is likely poked and will need to be replaced. If all is good, clean the communicator at the bottom with water paper or a scotch pad. Make sure the inside is clean and reassemble it. Put everything back together. Make sure the battery is putting out 13v, then try and start the bike. If not, charge the battery. Once all that is done, the bike should start easily. If it is still problematic, there could be an electrical system issue. For that check this video:

If im not mistaken its the 2014 250 freeride bendix and crown gear-- i have them in my 2013 300.

Mine works just fine.

Like they say the ratios are different.
Starter - crown gear (no change)
Crown gear - bendix (ratio changes)
Bendix - crank (no change)

When i ordered the parts , in error a 2015 crown gear was sent and the ratio to the starter did not match , ratio from 2015 crown gear to 2014 bendix was however the same...
But i am talking about the 300 xcw...

Check the parts fiche if unsure. Freeride and big bike parts are the same from 2016 and the bendix is updated as you pointed out

Thanks for the input guys. After a bit of research and looking at your suggestions, my buddy has decided to let the seller sort this out. He is returning the bike for now.

I know KTM did a recall on the Freeride for the Bendix if I remember correctly. Took mine in, they replaced at no cost, no Problem

Sorry to revive an old thread, just want to double check now, for a xc-w 250, would I ask for the freeride bendix and crown gear, or the 2016 model 250?
